A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man is a novel that provides the readers with key insights into the life of the protagonist, Stephen Dedalus, who is the fictional alter ego of Joyce.

Summary Of The Book

A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man revolves around the life of Stephen Dedalus, who is Joyce’s fictional alter ego. The plot is narrated in a voice that isn’t Stephen’s own, but one that is sensitive to his emotions. This novel starts off by telling the readers about the fears and confusion faced by Stephen, when he sets foot into the outside world. First, he attends Clongowes Wood College, where he excels academically, but has to constantly cope with his classmate’s jibes.

After gaining admission into Belvedere College, Stephen’s appointed as the class leader. He then wins a handsome cash prize from his school for the essay writing competitions he had won previously. He starts visiting prostitutes with his new fortune. The distance between him and his father continues to increase. He is also haunted by the memories of his first love and regrets his involvement in many sinful practices. Stephen then attends a church, where he hears the priest speak about hell. He then resolves to steer clear of these sins, to lead a better life. Several characters in this book represent those who have been a part of Joyce’s life.

Stephen then attends the University College Dublin, but soon realizes that his surroundings restrict him from developing himself fully as an artist. He secludes himself from society and spends hours reading and writing. Stephen then decides to leave Dublin and live in Paris, but he doesn’t forget to make a mention of his hometown in his diary.
